Cowes Week - Shutter Speed & Street Portrait Photography Meetup - Cowes Parade - 10am - 3 hours
Summary
Cowes Week can provide a wide and varied opportunity for some great photography. We’ll be walking through Cowes on the second day of the Cowes Week regatta with intension of capturing some of the energy and excitement the event provides.

In this session we’ll be looking at three distinctly different challenges.

Example Challenges
Shutter Speed
Races start from the Royal Yacht Squadron battlements throughout the day. Here you can get right on the line and see who gets off to the best start. Our focus will be on the race officers and the countdowns to each race. This will be an opportunity to capture people in action. The setting up of each race start, the firing of the cannons and the raising of the race flags.

The challenge will be to capture a series of 4 shots that tell a story of how a race is started. A fast shutter speed and a quick trigger finger will be required to capture the action!

Landscape & Action Photography
Along the green towards Egypt Point will be an opportunity to capture shots of the boats out on the water. If you don’t have a telephoto sense don’t worry, consider how you can incorporate elements of the landscape into your shots of the boats out on the water.

Portrait Photography
Walking back towards the Regatta Village and through the High Street will give the group an opportunity to photograph some of the street entertainment that goes on throughout the week.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations around Isle Of Wight.

New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Isle Of Wight Photography Facebook Group here to share your photos after the session.

Our classes and photography sessions are limited to a max of 5 students - due to current COVID restrictions

We ask that everyone attending a meetup follows social distancing guidelines:

Stay home if you're sick.
Keep 2 metres away from others.
Don't make unnecessary physical contact with others. Avoid physical greetings, such as handshakes, hugs and kisses.
Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based sanitiser.

Classic Car Extravaganza - Abstract & Reflections Photography Class - Ryde Esplanade - 11am - 2 hours
Summary
Now in its 19th year, the Isle of Wight Charity Classic Car features vehicles from all over the UK and mainland Europe. These spectacular vintage, classic, custom and retro cars provide a wide and varied opportunity for some great photography. We’ll be walking along the esplanade with intension of capturing some of the design, colour and excitement of the event.

In this session we’ll be looking at three different challenges that will run concurrently throughout the session.

Example Challenges
Abstract Photography - 4 of 1 Challenge
The main challenge will look at highlighting the art of these cars. Instead of trying to capture the entire vehicle in one shot whilst people mill around it and get in the way, lets focus on the finer details like the hood ornaments, body shape, chrome grill, wheel design and paint work etc.

The challenge will be to capture a series of 4 shots of the vehicle without showing the entire car. 4 finer details, one car! You can attempt this challenge on as many vehicles as you want throughout the session.

Focal & Depth of Field Photography
With most of the cars lined up along the esplanade there is the opportunity to capture some interesting depth of field shots. This could be a group of the same model of car, a compliment of different coloured vehicles or the car in relation to its location and the other spectators. Use vehicles in the foreground as the focal point and have the cars, people or landscape objects in the background blur to create a narrow depth of field.

Reflection Photography Challenge
This task challenges you to observe the reflective surfaces of the vehicles and capture an image of another vehicle! Most of the cars at the show are parked alongside each other, which gives you a great opportunity to capture the reflection of the car parked beside in the polished chrome, mirrors, windows or polished body work of the car you are photographing.
